Small Changes - Big Impact

Juli here. I'm one of the original founders at eco + amour. I write most of the blog posts, fyi!

Growing up, my mom was ever the eco-conscious Earth Mama. This was maybe due to the fact that she lived in BC for a large part of the 70s/80s, and we all know BC is progressive when it comes to green initiatives. Anyway, we always ate a healthy diet, composted (before it was mandatory), and reused many things that most people chucked in the garbage. We did beach sweeps (growing up in Nova Scotia there's lots o' beach!) and shopped thrift (it's just as fun now as it was back then).

But, we weren't actually living a "low-impact lifestyle". We did as much as we could with what we knew and what was available.

Now as a mom myself, I try to be as green as possible, but I know I still have MANY improvements ahead of me. Just as we tell our customers, it's not about changing everything all at once. It's about taking manageable steps towards whatever your goal is.

Let me tell you about a few changes I've made since we've opened the store.

REUSABLE MENSTRUAL CUP
I really wish I would have made this change when I first heard about the Diva Cup. I was a little intimidated by it. Why? I'm not sure because I got the hang of it first try. In my opinion, it's more comfortable than tampons and works better. I am SO happy I made the switch. I'm going to save lots of $$ and I'm putting an end to wasteful menstrual products. Should we stock some menstrual cups in the shop? Send us a message or comment on here!

SAFETY RAZOR
I sometimes use my hubby's electric razor, but I don't always find it works the best, and I'm sick of disposable plastic razors. The obvious answer was to get a safety razor. So far, so good. I've read that you don't need to switch the blades too often, so the waste involved with one of these is very little (and zero plastic...yay!). If you have little ones, make sure you store it out of reach! Again, please let us know if we should bring some in the shop!

REFILLING MY BEAUTY + HOME NEEDS
Of course, this has been the biggest and easiest change seeing as I own a refill shop! I am thoroughly enjoying the experience. My favourite refill lately has been Sapadilla's Grapefruit + Bergamot Dish Soap (and then trying out the Sweet Lavender + Lime). They both smell so good that I don't really mind hand-washing dishes at the moment (haha). Next to my dish soap, I have a refilled bottle of Robi Luxury Skin Care's Hydrating Body Lotion to keep my hands extra soft post-dish washing. Some of my other refill favourites: Graydon's All Over Body Soap (for hubby + me), Lines of Elan's Baby Wash (for my littles) and Bathorium's BePure Elixir (I'm a huge bath fanatic!).

MY NEXT SWITCH
I'm a little embarrassed to say I still have not made a full switch from disposable cotton pads to reusable ones. I'm almost through my supply now and then I'm going to start using Siima Handmade's Organic Cotton Rounds. We have them in the shop (in-store and online).

What changes have you made recently and what will you change next?
